Thanks to modern technology the process of new life, from conception to the development of the embryo and then finally a fetus has been brought to life in a series of mesmerizing pictures. Starting with the very first stages leading up to the creation of a little person ready to enter our world. These amazing images captured by Lennart Nilsson, a Swedish photographer, show every detail of how life beautifully unfolds.
The initial stage of conception
Every vivid detail of a sperm swimming through the fallopian tubes to reach the egg is captured in this photo. Sperm can live as long as 72 hours. The fastest swimming sperm can reach the egg in as little as 30 minutes, while slower moving sperm can sometimes take up to a day. , An estimated amount of up to 40 million sperm cells might be released when a man ejaculates.
Spermatozoon swimming towards egg swiftly in the fallopian tube
The egg is about 16 times bigger than a sperm cell, which fuse together in the process of fertilization.
This is the moment where a sperm first meets an egg.
Entering the Egg Cell
Initial stage of the almost 9-month process of a little human developing in the womb. Out of the millions of sperm that are released, one eventually fuses with an egg to start the process of life.
Up Close and Personal With a spermatozoon
All of the genetic material is in the head of the sperm, while the tail is what propels it in its fertilization journey.
First Picture of the Baby
After about a week, the fertilized egg cell moves from the fallopian tube into the uterus.
This stage of development is crucial. It is when the egg implants into the uterine wall.
Day 22 of an Embryo
The grey area eventually turns into a skull and brain
The Heart Beating on Day 18
On about day 18, the heart develops and starts beating.
On about day 28 a fetus might look like this, with a clear spinal cord.
What a Face Looks Like During Development
Can you see the face forming here? This is what an embryo looks like when it first forms in the womb.
Around day 40, the placenta starts to form. The placenta has everything the baby needs for the next 9 months of development.
Baby Forming In The Womb
This cute embryo is starting to shape together to look more like a healthy baby.
The 10th Week
Here we can see the eyes forming as well as fingers. During the tenth week, the eyelids form, and the eyes will open.
This period of time is known as the quickening and it is when the baby moves as well as the hands.
This is the time where the shape of a baby is fully formed and is now continuing to grow larger.
The Nervous System Developing
The skin in the developing fetus is translucent and you can see the blood vessels forming.
Around week 18, the baby can start to hear sounds from outside the womb.
See here how the baby has fingernails, and it is also developing eyebrows and hair.
The baby is about 20 cm long, and it has wooly hair known as lanugo on the entire head.
The growing child is now shifting development to the brain.
The baby looks fully formed and almost ready to meet the world.
