Together with ikebana and Zen gardens, Bonsai is one of the most recognisable cultural expressions of Japan. And worlds most respected Bonsai masters is Masahiko Kimura. His work is widely recognised.
Mashiko Kimura’s designs are often seen as controversial since he does not stick to the traditional bonsai rules. He combines pieces of dead wood with living wood and makes gravity defying pieces. One of his most famed bonsai is a Hanoki forest planting that is a sculptural masterpiece. Balanced on two pieces of interlocking slate, it features Hanoki cypress and Itoigawa Shimpaku Juniper.
Many pieces were reproduced after his masterpiece, yet the original version still stands in his garden today. Located in Omiya, Japan, Kimura opens his impressive garden up to the public upon request in order to share his award-winning trees with the public.
