If cartoons are anything to go by, cats and dogs are not exactly the best of friends.
In fact, the history of cats and dogs often suggests they don’t make great bedfellows. Dogs seem to love their humans completely and unconditionally, happy to just be fed, watered and taken for a walk every now and again. While cats can come across as hard work, often cute and lovely, but often making you work for their affection. Then again, dogs can be hard work too, sometimes.
Every now and again, however, you come across a video that makes you reassess your preconceived notions of how animals behave.
A woman in Turkey caught a cat and dog flipping expectations when, with the cat seemingly stuck in a pond of some sort, an enthusiastic and helpful dog jumped in and rescued the little guy.
In the video, it seems as if the cat is trying to claw its way out. Undeterred, however, the dog knows the only way to save the feline is to jump in the water itself.
The dog leaps in, swiftly manoeuvres itself under the cat, and basically lifts the soggy moggy to safety with the top of its head.
And, to keep the tension up, it also seems for a brief moment like the dog them subsequently gets stuck in the same bit of water! Thankfully, the dog obviously knows how to handle itself and hoists itself up and out.

Some viewers picked up on the fact that, while the video is great and heartwarming and all, couldn’t the person filming the encounter maybe step in to help? Maybe their hands were tied, or they’d set up the stunt themselves, who knows.
One person wrote:
When I see these things I always ask what the camera man would do to help!! He at first could pull out the cat!! Dont you think???
Though another Twitter user offered this reply:
That’s because the animals need to figure it out for themselves. Those animals worked together to solve a problem and now they’re stronger for it. Humans saving animals doesn’t always help them, sometimes they need to figure things out for themselves.
Others, however, were just happy to see the animals save themselves:
What a pooch. Real little hero
I love a good rescue story, though I reckon the film rights will have already been bought by a movie studio by now…
