In Hai Phong International Hospital, in Hai Phong Vietnam the birth of of baby clutching his mother’s IUD was a novel experience for the staff. A photograph of this newborn gripping the faulty intrauterine device that was implanted into his mother, who has 2 other children has gone viral.
“After delivery, I thought him holding the device was interesting, so I took a picture. I never thought it would receive so much attention.” said Tran Viet Phuong who is an obstetrician where the baby boy was born. This picture was then sent out to the social media platforms of the hospital where it exceeded anyone’s expectations, or even idea of how many times it would be shared and commented upon.
When the baby’s mother decided to have an IUD fitted she did not expect to be giving birth as coils are put in place to prevent sperm from fertilizing eggs. Copper or hormones are released after it has been placed in the uterus. What seems to be a reasonable explanation for the obvious failure of this IUD is that it may have been displaced from the original location causing it’s ineffectiveness.
Fortunately there were no complications and the result of a healthy baby weighing 7lbs is a great relief for the mom.
In contrast to the determination this little boy had to join the world, a baby born in Brazil earlier this year seemed less than chuffed to join us.
On the 13th of February Isabela Pereira de Jesus was born in the afternoon via a caesarean section in a Rio de Janeiro hospital.
Usually when babies are born they make their presence known by wailing and if they don’t let us know that their lungs are in working order with some screaming, the doctors will stimulate them to check all is well. Photographer Rodrigo Kunstmann captured a brilliant moment of little Isabela in an angry glare directed at the obstetrician that immediately became a meme that went viral when posted to Facebook.
“When I posted it, I thought it would have the potential to become a meme, but it’s always a matter of luck. She opened her eyes wide and didn’t cry, she made a ‘sulky’ face, her mother gave a kiss and it was only after they cut the umbilical cord that she started to cry” said Rodrigo when chatting to a Brazilian publication Crescer.
