With their big claws, sharp teeth and huge bodies, bears can be very dangerous animals. Black bears can get up to 6 feet tall and weigh between 200 and 600 pounds, but despite their size, they can actually run very fast as well. Black bears are not uncommon in the United States but when this bear was spotted in Florida, all of the residents were alarmed.
In order to contain the bear, Wildlife officials decided to shoot him with a tranquilizer dart. However, this plan went terribly wrong.
As soon as the tranquilizer set in, the bear got confused and started to panic.
In his panic, the bear ran into the ocean and started swimming into the Gulf.
Biologist Adam witnessed what happened and came to the rescue.
Without hesitation, he jumped into the water to save the bear from drowning.
By then, the poor bear could no longer move his legs.
Adam held on to the 400-pound bear and swam him to the shore which was 75 feet away.
The bear had trouble keeping his head above water but Adam never let him go under.
Finally, Adam got the bear to the shore safely.
Other than a few scratches, Adam didn’t have any injuries.
A tractor was used to transfer the heavy bear back to the Osceola National Forest.
What Adam did was absolutely heroic. This black bear could’ve easily eaten him alive but this didn’t hold Adam back. He just jumped right into the ocean, grabbed the bear and swam back to shore using all of the strength in his body. He deserves a medal!
