Most people when they think of wasps, think of aggressive insects they want to stay away from, as far as possible. Simply because their sting really hurts. But actually, wasps are often misunderstood. Not all species are aggressive. Some would be even considered to hippies. You think, “what? Wasp hippies?”. Well yes, have a look at their nests when given colored paper. They are truly psychedelic creations.
This all came to light when Mattia Menchetti was still a biology student at the University of Florence. He set up an experiment, giving a wasp colony, European Paper wasps, different colored paper. the insects would eventually construct their own kaleidoscopic houses. And as you can see, the result is pretty remarkable, if not slightly reminiscent of a psychedelic trip.
Menchetti shared the outcome of his experiment on his, Notula Zoologica, and the close up rainbow-colored results are quite fascinating.
