Hundreds Of Farmers Stay Silent At Auction To Help A Family Buy Their Land Back

David’s family has been farmers for as long as he can remember. Their land in Nebraska was passed down from one generation to the next and it seemed as if David would follow the same path.

But, that all changed when 80 acres of their land was sold to a distant relative. The relative did not consider the interests of the family and went on to sell the land to someone else.

The land was broken up and David’s family was no longer a part of the family homestead. What they had spent years building as a family legacy was all gone.

David grew up hearing this story over and over as a child. Throughout his life, he dreamed of somehow getting back the family’s land and rebuild their business.

That opportunity finally came. In 2011, several years after losing it, the precious 80 acres suddenly appeared on auction. David and his father decided they would do everything they can to save up and reclaim the land, but they knew it would need an extraordinarily large sum of money.

On the auction day, their hearts sank when they saw more than 200 farmers were present there.

“Even though I dreamt of getting the land back for as long as I could remember, when the day came, I wasn’t ready,” David said.

They felt their chances were slim to none, but decided to give it their best shot. When the auctioneer announced their land, they placed their bid and held their breath. But when he called for a second bid, the two-hundred farmers did something nobody was expecting.

They remained completely silent!

David and his dad were stunned. They didn’t understand what was happening and even the auctioneer was stupefied. He made further attempts to solicit a new bid, but everyone stayed silent the entire time. With no other option, the auctioneer called for a break.

They reconvened, three times, but not a single of the other farmers spoke up.

As it turns out, those 200 farmers did not attempt to bid because they wanted the family to get their land back. David’s case was apparently known to the Nebraskan farming community. The farmers knew just how much the land meant to David and his family, and decided to help them get back what was their own.

With no other option, the auctioneer slammed down the gavel and gave David and his father the winning bid.

Today, David remembers the auction that took place in 2011 as if it were yesterday.

“I’ve had two profoundly humbling days in my life. The first was the day my son was born. The second was that unforgettable day at the Auction House,” David said.

This incredible story left David and his family filled with gratitude and amazement. It is a great example of the true power of kindness and empathy!
