A Minnesota dad died a hero over Father’s Day weekend by saving his 3-year-old son, who fell off a bridge and into a lake, according to authorities and a new report.
Christopher Franklin Nicholas Schultz, 32, sprang into action when the tot fell from a bridge into Dead Shot Bay on Detroit Lakes on Saturday night, the Becker County Sheriff’s Office said.
Schultz struggled to keep his son above water, authorities said. Onlookers helped bring the toddler to shore, but the dad, who lived in nearby Frazee, Minn., did not emerge from the water.
He was discovered by a team of divers and a fisherman around 9 p.m. and was taken to a hospital in the city of Detroit Lakes, about 45 miles east of Fargo, North Dakota, where he died.
The boy suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
“The guy sacrificed his life to make sure his kid would see another day,” family friend Matthew Clark told CBS Minnesota.
A go fund me has been set up to cover his funeral costs and other medical expenses. May his soul rest in peace, this true hero.
